THROUGH THE EYES OF FIVE ARTISTS
DECEMBER 2024 TO THE END OF JANUARY 2025
Wendy Schneider – “Capturing the quiet beauty of everyday objects through oil on canvas, my still life paintings invite a closer look at the subtle interplay of light, shadow, and colour, reflecting the vibrancy of life in Central Victoria.”
Elaine van Dyk – Elaine enjoys working in many mediums, but she has a particular love for printmaking, experimenting with etching and aquatints, dry point, lino cut, woodblock and gelatine plate printmaking techniques. Her work is an exploration of the deep connection she feels with the landscape and its flora and fauna.
Judy Hutchins – Judy creates artworks that are evocative. Through her sensitive use of colour and texture she captures the feel, mood and the essence of her subject. Her artwork is deeply personal and is her emotive response to the subject. Judy works in a number of mediums with a passion for oil and cold wax.
Karen Macartney – Karen’s inspiration is drawn from her love of nature. Predominantly working with pastel her traditionalist training is complimented by by her contemporary use of light and composition.
Desma Talamo – These 5 Still Life works reflect my ongoing interest in this genre. The more recent acrylic works, using altered and simplified forms that lean into abstraction, have become the vehicle for my exploration of bold colour, spatial relationships between the objects in the frame and interpretive perspectives.

JUDY HUTCHINS – SCRATCHBOARD ARTIST
UP TO SCRATCH
What is Scratchboard Art?

Sometimes referred to as scraperboard (especially in Great Britain), but usually called scratchboard in North America and Australia, is a form of direct engraving where the artist scratches off dark ink to reveal a white layer beneath. Scratchboard refers to both a fine-art medium, and an illustrative technique using sharp knives and tools for engraving into a thin layer of white clay that is coated with dark, often black India ink.
Modern scratchboard originated in the 19th century in Britain and France. Unlike many drawing mediums, where the artist adds in the mid-tones and shadows, with scratchboard the artist is working by adding in the highlights. The artist can use a variety of tools to begin scratching away the black ink and reveal the white clay that is underneath. Values within the artwork are achieved by scratching more or less of the black ink off of the board.
Judy is a Heathcote based artist who works in a number of mediums including oil and cold wax, printmaking, drawing and oil painting. She has been working in scratchboard for over ten years and finds this medium combines her love of drawing and tonal work. Her main scratchboard subjects are animals with particular emphasis on horses.

EXHIBITION 5TH AUGUST TO 30 SEPTEMBER

CLAIRE ROUSSAC
Claire studied fine art throughout school and has always painted for fun. However, the focus shifted when in 2019 she rented an art studio from Boom Gallery in Newtown, Geelong, and began a more thorough exploration of her personal style and sparked the desire to share these works in a gallery context.
“for me, the creative process begins with inspiration from dog walks, coastal escapades, and drives through the rolling hills west of Geelong. Founded on various locations such as Merrigum, Darlington and Curlewis, this collection is a study of earth and sky and how they come together to create atmosphere within the landscape, whether it be early mornings, dusk or late afternoon”
Claire’s work is an intuitive representation of light, mood and form within a landscape, with a focus on colour, texture and movement.
Claire has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Marketing, and Graduate Certificate in Arts and Cultural Management. Her work has appeared in various group exhibitions at The Space Gallery in Newtown in 2021, 2022 and 2023. claireroussac@gmail.com
